You have made a good choice. I hope and pray it is sincere and that you will truly accept Jesus as your savior from your sins and from the punishment of Hell. Jesus answered, "I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." This passage of scripture teaches that there is only one way to get to heaven. People need Jesus if they want to get there. We are all born sinners, which means that we are imperfect by nature. From the day we were born we have chosen to do wrong many, many times. The book of Romans (6:23) in the Bible says: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This means that every single person has, at one time or another, done something unacceptable to God. Whether it is something that seems harmless, like stealing a paper clip or something as evil as murder, that is enough to disqualify you from heaven. To get to heaven you must ask Jesus to forgive you for what you have done wrong so that you are cleared of all guilt. He will then give to you his perfection, replacing your imperfection. Thus you will be declared perfect and holy, acceptable to God. Jesus then comes to reside within you in the form of the Holy Spirit. This is known as being "born-again" so that you have true spiritual (eternal) life. God requires this of all whom he receives into heaven. Jesus says: "Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." -John 3:3 Jesus Christ is the only one who can save you because he is both God and man, the only one who died for you, paying the penalty that your sins deserved. 2000 years ago, when he hung on that Roman cross at the top of a hill called "The Place of a Skull", he suffered and died in your place. He felt the horrible wrath and judgment of God the Father, as he experienced in himself the penalty for your sins and those of the whole world. "and he himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by his wounds you were healed." -1 Peter 2:24 Jesus was then raised from the dead, still bearing the scars of his death. Some of those who believed in him came to his tomb after his death, but did not find his body there, only two angels: "And the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying." -Matthew 28:5-6 If you want to be forgiven of your sins and be assured of going to heaven after you die you must acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the only way, that he is fully God and fully human, that he died on the cross for your sins and then rose from the dead. Next you must admit with all your heart that you have done what is wrong and ask God to forgive you. "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." - Romans 10:9-10 Accepting Jesus as your savior means much more than guaranteeing heaven after you die. While you still live in this life it means a whole new quality of life, not in material possessions or in things being different in your circumstances, but a whole new way to be happy and joyful. It is a whole new way to experience freedom from things you're addicted to, like drugs or alcohol or food or TV or sports or shopping or playing video games or viewing pornography or anything else. You worship that which you love the most, so if you are controlled by anything in a destructive way, know that Jesus can set you free. Jesus therefore was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31-32 Once you have received Jesus as your savior you now have the infinite power of God working in you to cause you to overcome anything that has controlled you. Then you can be free to do what you were created to do: be completely satisfied and joyously happy in God.
